A Word From Fr. Tom - 09.03.17

Today we celebrate the Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings focus on perseverance in difficult times and answering the Lord’s call to follow him.

In the first reading from the Book of Jeremiah, we read how the prophet Jeremiah experienced many hardships. He complains to God that he has been duped. Later in Jeremiah’s words, which we do not read today, he affirms the Lord’s presence with him.

In the Gospel from St. Matthew, we continue reading from last week’s passage, Jesus says to his disciples that whoever wishes to follow him must take up his cross and follow him. Jesus tells his disciples he must go to Jerusalem and suffer and die on the cross and on the third day be raised. This is the first of three Passion predictions recorded in Matthew’s Gospel.

As we celebrate this Labor Day weekend, let us be thankful for the gifts of Labor God blesses us with and be grateful the for the gifts and talents. Let us return that thanks by being committed to God. Please join us for Mass this Labor Day, Monday, at 9am.

Vacation 2017 Please note that I will be heading on my annual vacation to the Atlantic Coast this coming week September 7-17. There will be no daily Masses this Friday, September 8 and Saturday, September 9 (including no Confessions or Eucharistic Adoration) or the week of September 11-16 (including no Confessions or Eucharistic Adoration Saturday morning.) The church will be open for private prayer daily from 7:00am to 5:00pm.

Daily Masses and Confessions will be available for St. James parishioners at our neighboring parishes of St. Mary in Glenfield, Good Samaritan in Ambridge, St. Joseph in Coraopolis, St. Margaret Mary in Moon Township, and St. Catherine in Crescent.

Fr. Richard Terdine will be “on call” for any funerals and will be the celebrant for the weekend Masses. Please hold any phone calls, messages, and e-mails while I am away.

Labor Day In observance of the Labor Day holiday, the only Mass on Monday, September 4 will be 9:00am. The Rectory offices will also be closed. They will reopen on Tuesday, September 5 at 8:30am.
