LIFE IS A BEAUTIFUL GIFT!

As a priest for fifteen years, one of the hardest things for me to do is a child’s funeral. Day in and day out we turn on the radio or television and hear another victim to gun violence, another car accident because of speeding too fast or texting while driving, drug overdose, or suicide.

Today we celebrate the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In today’s first reading and in the Gospel, we hear two accounts of life being restored. In the First Reading from the Book of King’s, the prophet Elijah pleaded with God to revive the widow’s son. In today’s Gospel of Luke, we read how Jesus journeys to the City of Nain and is moved by pity for a grieving mother and restored her son’s life.

Let us pray this weekend for parents who have lost a child. Pray for our youth and young adults who face bullying in school or on social media, those who are finding it hard to been a teenager or face pressures at home. Say a special prayer this weekend to St. Felicity of Rome- the Patron Saint of parents who have lost children.

Parish Share 2016 The annual Parish Share Campaign is in full swing. A successful Parish Share collection helps our Diocese to function not only in service to St. James Parish, but all of the 199 parishes in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Parish Share funds our High School and College Campus Ministry programs, Correctional, Hospital and Nursing Home Chaplaincy programs, Elementary and Secondary School scholarships, Catholic Charities and St. Anthony School Programs, St. Paul Seminary and the Pastoral Center downtown. We all benefit from Parish Share. Our parish goal for 2016 is $173,549. Please be as generous as possible.
