A Word From Fr. Tom - 5.15.16

For the past fifty days, we have been immersed in the mystery of new life with the Risen Lord. Today is Pentecost Sunday, the “birthday of the church”! Pentecost is Greek meaning fifty days. Our readings today recall and celebrate all that the Holy Spirit has done for us and for the church. We receive the Holy Spirit at Baptism and also at Confirmation to guide us and give us strength.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells his Apostles, if you love me, you will keep my commandments. As we celebrate Pentecost, let us ask the Holy Spirit to come and fill us with love. The Spirit is there to assist as the church labors to witness to God’s truth, justice, peace, and love. Let us be aware of the value of that gift in our lives and be grateful for the gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgment, Courage, Knowledge, Reverence, and Wonder and Awe.

Cemetery Improvements I am pleased to announce that we are making much needed improvements to the St. James Cemetery. King Landscaping along with Jeff Reismeyer from Valley’s Best Tree Service recently removed several trees in the upper area of the cemetery. We have received permission from Sewickley Heights Borough to remove the trees for future expansion of the property and possibly add additional cemetery plots. Parishioner, Jake Smiley will be working on his Eagle Scout Project in the next few weeks which will include new fencing around the entire ceme- tery grounds and also clean up many of the bushes that surround the property. Spe- cial thanks to a “Friend of St. James” for making a monetary donation to make this project possible. We thank you for your patience and support as we improve our cemetery for our loved ones to be at peace and for families to enjoy the peace and beauty of our cemetery.
