USE OUR TALENTS!

It is the mid- point of November and the weather is changing, the leaves are falling and we are experiencing cooler temperatures. As we prepare for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas Season, this is a good time to evaluate how the year 2017 has been for us: what have we done and where do we want to go for the New Year. This is a good weekend to do some “internal soul searching” to start making some goals to be a better person.

The readings this weekend focus on using our gifts and talents to the best of our ability. In our first reading from the Book of Proverbs, a poet describes Wisdom as the perfect partner. She brings life and countless blessings to those who love her. The final chapter of Proverbs honors the worthy wife and the poem gives special attention to the hands of a perfect spouse. In the Second Reading from Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians, Paul reminds us to be prepared, for the day of the Lord will come unexpectedly. Paul encourages his people to be alert spiritually. In the Gospel of Matthew, we read the Parable of the Talents. Placed in the Lectionary towards the end of the liturgical year, this parable urges us to evaluate our own service. These three readings prepare us for the end of the year and challenge us to understand our life in terms of its ultimate purpose.

Jesus teaches us that careful preparation must be made for the final coming of the Lord. God calls us to live for his future and not our own. The task of all followers of Jesus is to devote our energies to God.

Do you have a passion for something that you do not use? Would you like to become more involved in the parish as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Altar Server, Choir Member, Religious Education Catechist or Youth Ministry Volunteer? Want to become a Member of the Women’s Guild, Knights of Columbus, and St. Vincent de Paul Society? This is a wonderful time to become active. How can I better use the talents that God has given me?
