A Word From Fr. Tom - 09.04.16

Last week I spent some time on the Atlantic Coast for my annual summer vacation. I had beautiful weather and it was hot but I did a lot of walking each day. I read the book “The Inner Voice of Love” by Henri Nouwen, which focused on a collection of short essays that was his personal journal when he had extreme anguish, wondering whether he would be able to hold on to his life. The book came to be, through friends of Fr. Nouwen encouraging him to share his short essays to others about the challenges of life and making a total commitment to Christ.

Today celebrate the Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings focus on making a total commitment to God.

In the first reading from the Book of Wisdom, we read a reflection on the limitations of human wisdom. God’s Holy Spirit gives wisdom, which we will need to help us understand what Jesus is asking us to do in today’s Gospel. True wisdom can be gained only by a proper relationship with God.

In the Gospel from St. Luke, Jesus teaches that discipleship is a total commitment to Jesus. Discipleship demands loyalty and a complete focus on the kingdom of God. Jesus tells us in order to be his disciple, we pick up our cross and follow him. Each of today’s readings reflect on those who choose to follow Jesus need practical wisdom.

As we celebrate this Labor Day weekend, let us be thankful for the gifts of labor God blesses us with and be grateful the for the gifts and talents. Let us return that thanks by being committed to Christ.

Please join us for Mass on Labor Day, Monday, at 9:00am.

Next Sunday, September 11 at the 9:30am and 11:30am Masses, Fr. Michael Ackerman, the Co-Vocation Director, and our St. Paul Seminarians will be here for both Masses.

Please note that because of the Triennial Clergy Convocation at Oglebay Conference and Resort in Wheeling West Virginia, there will be no daily Masses Monday, September 19 through Friday, September 23.

Parish Share 2016 The annual Parish Share campaign is in full swing. A successful Parish Share collection helps our Diocese to function not only in service to St. James Parish, but all of the 195 parishes in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. With schools and colleges now officially open for the new school year, Parish Share helps fund Catholic Campus Ministry programs to our local high school and college students. Our Goal this year is $173,549. Please be as generous as possible so we obtain our goal. We all benefit from Parish Share!

Parish Improvements S&N Industries of Harmony, PA has completed the “steep slope” church roof repairs and repairs to the bell tower on time and on budget. Now it will not leak! Special thanks to Diocesan Office of Property and Planning and Florida Consulting for their expert assistance with this major project. Funds from “Our Campaign For the Church Alive!” paid for this project in full. Thank you to all those parishioners who donated to the campaign to make this much needed repair possible.

The Diocese has granted St. James Parish permission to begin “Phase 2” of the project to completely replace the rectory garage roof with the same steel roof as the church. S&N Industries of Harmony has been awarded this contract and will begin work in October. Once again the Diocesan Office of Property and Planning and Florida Consulting will assist with the project.
