FOLLOW ME!

Last weekend was a glorious weekend for the Church of Pittsburgh as Bishop David A. Zubik ordained five men to the Priesthood Saturday morning at St. Paul Cathedral in Oakland. We congratulate the Class of 2017: Rev. Benjamin E. Barr - St. Monica Parish, Beaver Falls, Rev. Thomas J. Gramc - St. Ferdinand Parish, Cranberry Township, Rev. David W. Green - St. Elizabeth Parish, Pleasant Hills, Rev. Alexander J. Schrenk - Assumption Parish, Bellevue, and Rev. Daniel R. Waruszewski - St. Teresa of Avila Parish, Perrysville. Let us pray for these newly ordained as they begin their ministry.

This weekend we celebrate the Thirteen Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings focus on the cost of discipleship and showing hospitality to others. In the First reading from the Second Book of Kings, we read how a devout family invites a servant of God into their home.

In the Gospel, we continue reading the “Mission Discourse” in the Gospel of St. Matthew. Jesus instructs his disciples on the challenges, sufferings, and support they will encounter on their missionary journeys.

Hospital, Nursing Home and Hospice Calls Please note that whenever a loved one is admitted to a hospital, nursing home or hospice center to please notify the nurse on duty that the patient is Catholic. If the person needs to receive the Sacrament of Anointing every facility in the Pittsburgh area has a local Catholic parish that covers the facility for the Sacraments. Here at St. James Parish I am “on call” at Heritage Valley Sewickley Hospital on the weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) for “emergency calls.” The local parishes of St. Joseph in Coraopolis, Good Samaritan in Ambridge and St. Margaret Mary in Moon Township cover the hospital Monday thru Thursday. With the shortage of priests, it is physically impossible to visit every major hospital, nursing home or hospice in the Pittsburgh area. Please notify the “Catholic chaplain on duty” for Communion and Anointing.

As a courtesy please notify me when your loved one is admitted so that we can put them on our prayer chain. Whenever possible, please ask to be anointed before going into the hospital for major tests or surgery.

Independence Day Mass on Independence Day, Tuesday, July 4 will be at 9:00am. In observance of the Fourth of July holiday, the Rectory Offices will be closed for the holiday.

Parish Improvements Allegheny Refrigeration recently installed a new walk-in freezer in our school cafeteria. Ralphs Hood and Duct Cleaning Kitchen Equipment recently cleaned and sanitized our kitchen equipment. Funds from our Fish Fry are helping to pay for these projects.

Flat Roof Replacement Schulteis Roofing Inc. of Plum Boro has begun replacing the Flat Roof on the Gathering Space, School Gym and connecting corridor that connects the school to the Gathering Space. Funds from Our Campaign for the Church Alive will cover the cost of the entire project.

Work continues this week on renovating both the men’s and women’s restrooms in the Gathering Space. The only restrooms available are in the church (near the Ushers’ Room). Please be patient while the renovations are taking place. Because of the limited available bathrooms, both restrooms in the church are now for both men and women.

Improvements to our Prayer Path along Walnut Street continues. The old trees and shrubs and mulch have been removed and a new drainage system has been installed. New lighting along the sidewalks are being installed. New plants, shrubs and benches will be installed in the later part of the summer.

Donations continue to be accepted for the Prayer Path upgrades. If you would like to make a donation, please contact our Business Manager, Terri Price at 412-741-6650 extension 312 or email her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Please make checks payable to St. James Catholic Parish and memo it “Prayer Path Upgrade Project.” We are now looking into having donations of a certain denomination applied towards engraved memorial bricks as a way to pave the Prayer Path in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Stay tuned for further details regarding this endeavor.

Finance Council I am pleased to appoint Bernadette Wenglik to the Finance Council. Bernadette is a graduate of Robert Morris University with a B.S.B.A. in Management. She has spent the past sixteen years working in the Accounting Department for Real Estate Investors. She is a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Women’s Guild, and helps out at the Fish Fry. She currently resides in Sewickley.

Welcome Home A special St. James Welcome to Matthew, Carmee, Madeline, Wesley, Elsa and Julia Horton who recently registered at St. James Parish.
