A Word From Fr. Tom - 05.14.17

My mom, Marge Burke, is a remarkable woman. She and my dad Bill just celebrated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary. During that time they have raised three children and have seven wonderful grandsons. Raised in Hazelwood, she attended St. Stephen School in Hazelwood and graduated from St. John the Baptist high school in Lawrenceville. After high school she worked for the Diocese of Pittsburgh with Bishop Vincent Leonard until she had her first child, my oldest sister, Lisa. I give thanks each and every day for all that my mom has done for me over the past forty-six years of my life. As we reach the midpoint of the Easter season, this weekend we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Easter and Mother’s Day!

In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we read how the Apostles offer prayers for members of the community chosen to care for the needy through the power of the Holy Spirit. The church continues to grow in great numbers. The twelve Apostles exhibit their leadership role and call the community to choose seven deacons to help them with God’s work. In the Gospel of John, we read part of Jesus’ farewell discourse. Jesus has a dialogue with Thomas and Philip as he says “do not let your hearts be troubled, you have faith in God, have also in me.” Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. He and the Father are one.

Whenever our faith is tested or whatever we are struggling with, remember Jesus knows us, and loves us. Let us keep moving forward to hold peace and trust in Christ. He will help us reach our destination in life.

Let us pray for all living and deceased mothers, grandmothers and Godmothers and aunts in our life.

Parish Improvements Tudi Mechanical of McKees Rocks recently installed a new furnace and air conditioner for the Rectory Offices.

***Please note that beginning Wednesday, May 24 the restrooms in the Gathering Space will be closed for renovations for approximately six weeks. We appreciate your patience and understanding that there will be limited bathroom access (one women's and one men’s restroom) available near the Ushers’ Room during the Sunday liturgies.***

On Mission For the Church Alive! Recently the Diocese of Pittsburgh Catholic updated the Pastors and On Mission Team Members about the results of the surveys and input from the listening sessions that were conducted last October. The diocese is considering a new possible grouping of St. James with St. Margaret Mary in Moon Township, St. Joseph in Coraopolis and St. Catherine of Siena in Crescent. This new grouping is very encouraging since we already partner with our neighbors across the Sewickley Bridge with our Lenten and Advent penance services and all four parishes currently take turns with during the week with coverage at Heritage Valley/Sewickley Hospital.

Also our St. James Parish St. Vincent de Paul Society has recently taken on covering the Coraopolis area for needy families and individuals since the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Joseph Parish is no longer active. Stay tuned for future updates in the parish bulletin and during my homilies about this very important process.

Finance Council I am pleased to appoint Chris DeAndrea to our Parish Finance Council. Chris grew up in Scott Township and attended Our Lady of Grace elementary school, and Bishop Canevin high school. He has a degree in Marketing and General MBA from Duquesne University and currently is employed at Henderson Brothers Retirement in Downtown Pittsburgh as a Retirement Planning Consultant. He and his wife, Jen currently reside in Kennedy Township and are expecting their first child in June.

Looking Ahead Next Thursday, May 25 is Ascension Thursday, a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will be at 6:45am, 9:00am, and 7:00pm. Please note that there will be no daily Mass on Friday, May 26.

Sweet Sixteen! Next Friday, May 26, I will celebrate my sixteenth anniversary of ordination as a diocesan priest. I was ordained on May 26, 2001 at St. Paul Cathedral by Bishop Donald Wuerl. I am truly grateful for being your pastor here at St. James.

Wedding Bells Congratulations to Andrew Gaus and Robin Snyder who are celebrating their wedding this weekend!

Welcome A special welcome to Ashley Mayo and her children: Jordan, Gianna, Alexandra, and Stella who recently registered at St. James.

Second Collection Next weekend (May 20/21) there will be a second collection for Catholic Relief Services. Please be as generous as possible.
