CELEBRATING CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK!

Last Friday, I traveled to Emil’s Restaurant in Rankin to have dinner with my friend Frannie from Swissvale. Frannie was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago and after several treatments and medications, she beat it! Her attitude and faith has helped her get through the cancer treatments. She said to me “Fr. Tom, I am blessed!” This weekend we celebrate the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings this weekend focus on being blessed.

In the first reading from Zephaniah, we read how a prophet speaks to God’s humble people and reminds them to seek justice and humility. In the second reading from Corinthians, Paul offers the Corinthian community a new meaning for wisdom. The true measure of wisdom is in the things of God rather than in the things of this world. In today’s Gospel passage from the Fifth Chapter of Matthew, (which we will be reading the next four Sunday’s) we read from the “Sermon on the Mount” the Beatitudes which are the framework of Jesus’ ministry. Each Beatitude describes an action or a life situation that is rewarded by God and helps open our minds and hearts to a new way of seeking and judging.

Let us be open to being a little more humble in thoughts and actions and focus on our weaknesses and our strengths.

This weekend at the 9:30am Mass we officially kick off Catholic Schools Week 2017. This year’s theme is “Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. We welcome our students, parents, faculty and staff. I am a product of both Catholic and Public Education, and am grateful for attending a Catholic Elementary School to lay the foundation of my Catholic faith!

There are many wonderful options for schools in our area. St. James Catholic School offers a quality Catholic education is a safe and loving environment. There is a 3 and 4 year old pre-school program and Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. We are a great “neighborhood school!” Please call the school office at 412-741-5540, extension 100 for more information or to take a tour of the school.

The Coraopolis Elks Lodge 1090 and Elks chairwoman and parishioner, Ann Barger will conduct an awards presentation next weekend at the 9:30am Mass to several of our school students who participated in writing an essay expressing the topic, “Why Is It Important To Vote.” Congratulations to the following winners: 6th grade: Sofia Bencic, Joel Fabain, and Candace Cardwell 8th grade: Catherine Martsolf, Julia Centofanti, and Tyler Pontello

Special thanks to Eighth Grade teacher, Karen Scully for helping with this wonderful project.
